Seri Thai Garden: A Beautiful Park in Bangkok
Introduction
Seri Thai Garden, formerly known as BuengKum Water Park, is a public park located in the Bang Kum District of Bangkok. Covering an area of 57 rai, this park offers a serene escape from the bustling city life. Originally, it was an old, large public pond known as “BuengKum” or “Bueng Ta Thong,” which had become shallower due to human activities. However, in 1985, the park underwent restoration and development as part of a flood control reservoir project initiated by His Majesty. Today, Seri Thai Garden stands as a testament to the beauty of nature and the preservation of historical significance.
History and Development
The transformation of BuengKum into Seri Thai Garden began in 1985 when the restoration and development project commenced. The primary objective was to create a flood control reservoir for Bangkok. The pond, capable of holding up to 1.5 million cubic meters of water, features floodgates that regulate water levels and release water to BuengKum and SaenSaeb Canals. In recognition of the park’s expansion and the celebration of King Rama XIII’s 50th coronation anniversary, it was named “BuengKum Water Park.”
In 1995, the park gained additional significance when members of the Free Thai Movement, also known as Seri Thai Movement, requested to use a portion of it as “Lan Seri Thai.” This section, officially opened on September 2, 1995, became a commemoration to the movement. Dusadee Phanomyong, daughter of the founder of the Free Thai Movement and a senior statesman of thailand, along with other members, suggested renaming the park “Suan Seri Thai” or “Seri Thai Garden.”
The official opening of Seri Thai Garden took place on August 16, 1997, coinciding with the 52nd anniversary of the end of World War II. Two years later, in August 1999, the park hosted the “Thai Peace Day” celebration, organized by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the PridiPhanomyong 100th Anniversary Celebration Committee. This event aimed to commemorate Thailand’s 54th liberation anniversary and honor the Free Thai Movement for their contributions to the nation.
Architecture and Attractions
Seri Thai Garden boasts several attractions that appeal to visitors of all ages and interests. One of the notable features is the Seri Thai Memorial Building, which houses the Seri Thai Memorial Museum, a youth library, and the BuengKum Water Park Museum. Visitors can relax in the pavilions situated along the pond’s edge, enjoying the tranquil atmosphere and picturesque views. Additionally, the park is home to over ten species of Thai and foreign palm trees, including rare varieties such as Carpentaria palm and Bismarck palm. Walking through the park, visitors will also encounter three forest parks: Suan Pa TaweeSook, Suan Pa Rom Sai, and Suan Pa Charoenkarn. These forest parks provide a natural habitat for large trees and perennial plants, such as Banyan trees, flame-trees, Cassod trees, and laurelwood.
Moreover, Seri Thai Garden boasts a diverse collection of scented flowering plants, predominantly native to Thailand.
