The King Rama I Monument

The King Rama I Monument, also known as the royal statue of Phrabat Somdet PhraPhutthayod Chulalok, holds significant historical and cultural importance in Bangkok, thailand. This majestic monument was constructed to honor the first king of Krung Rattanakosin, King Rama I. Situated at the feet of Pathom Barommarachanuson Bridge on the Bangkok side, the monument stands as a symbol of the nation’s gratitude and admiration for the royal lineage.

Historical Background:

Before the commemoration of the 150-year anniversary of Krung Rattanakosin in 1932, King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) proposed the construction of a permanent structure to serve as a memorial for King Rama I. His vision was to create a lasting tribute that would reflect the grace and honor of the first king of Krung Rattanakosin. The government promptly supported this idea, and it was decided that the construction of the memorial would coincide with the building of the first bridge across the Chao Phraya River.

Design and Construction:

The design of the King Rama I Monument was entrusted to Prince Narisara, the vice president of the Royal Institute at that time. He meticulously supervised the design process, ensuring that the monument would accurately capture the essence and grandeur of King Rama I. To bring the statue to life, Professor Silp Peerasri from Silpakorn University was commissioned to sculpt and mold the statue using bronze.

The statue depicts King Rama I in his full regalia, seated on a throne with his hands resting on a sword placed on his lap. The statue stands at a height of 4.6 meters, with an additional 1 meter elevation added later. It is mounted on a 2.30 meters wide marble base, facing Thanon Tripetch. On the rear side of the statue, a marble wall carved like a door is adorned with carved pillars on each side and a tympanum carved in Urna. The marble stone also bears inscriptions detailing the history of the monument’s construction.

The front of the monument features oblations, with flowers arranged in lotus-shaped decorations trays. Two fountains are positioned on either side, adding a touch of elegance to the overall design. The statue is surrounded by arc concrete fences in the front, while the middle section showcases Thai-style marble stones. Notably, a white elephant, the symbol of the Chakri Dynasty, is prominently carved in the middle of the stone.
