The Time Memorial Park: Honoring HRH the Princess Mother’s Legacy

Introduction

The Time Memorial Park is a significant landmark located in Srinagarind Dam, built by the Provincial Electricity Authority to commemorate the 90th birthday celebration of HRH the Princess Mother. Spanning across a vast area of 48,000 square meters, this park is situated near the Srinagarind Dam harbor at the foothill. Construction of the park began in April 1990 and was completed by March 1991. It stands as a testament to the appreciation for HRH the Princess Mother’s remarkable acts, duties, and her belief in the value of time.

Symbolism of the Sundial

The park’s design was carefully planned to communicate the importance of time, with the sundial serving as a prominent symbol. The sundial, made of concrete and iron, measures 23.80 meters in length along the curve. It has a width of 9.95 meters at its widest point and 6.25 meters at its narrowest. The gnomon, which casts a shadow from the sun, is made of alloy and is 6.50 meters long and 1.00 meter wide. Positioned at a tilt of 28.6 degrees to latitude 140 24′ 32″ N and longitude 990 7′ 36″ E, the gnomon faces south.

The sundial’s dial surface is covered with white grey color-coated tiles that feature symbols and acronyms to represent the months. There are different color lines on the dial surface that indicate specific time periods. The dark blue color line represents the months between January and June, while the light blue color line signifies the months between July and December. Additionally, the dark red color line denotes the time for the months of January to June, while the yellow color line indicates the time for the months of July to December. The reddish-orange and orange color lines display the hours, ranging from 07:00 to 18:00.

Reading the Sundial

To read the sundial, one must observe the shadow casted by the tip of the gnomon. The position of the shadow corresponds to the month and season. This unique feature of the Time Memorial Park’s sundial allows visitors to understand the passage of time and appreciate the significance of each moment.

Surrounding Area

Apart from the magnificent sundial, the park also offers a serene and picturesque surrounding area for visitors to relax and enjoy the breathtaking view of the Srinagarind Dam. The seating arrangements provide a comfortable spot for contemplation and appreciation of nature’s beauty. Visitors can immerse themselves in the tranquility of the park while admiring the tranquil waters of the dam.
