Kaeng Tana National Park is a stunning natural attraction located in thailand. It covers an area of approximately 80 square kilometers and is situated in Sirindhorn District and Khong Chiam District. The park boasts diverse terrain, including plateaus and low hills, with Khao Banthat being the highest point. The park is characterized by stunted trees and some grassland, creating a unique landscape for visitors to explore.
One of the main features of Kaeng Tana National Park is the presence of the Mun and Mekong Rivers, which flow through the park. The park office is conveniently located near the Mun River, providing easy access for visitors. The rivers not only add to the natural beauty of the park but also offer various recreational activities such as boating and fishing.
The name “Tana” holds significant meaning to the villagers and the general public. Originally, it was derived from the word “Morana” due to the strong currents and large rocks found throughout the area. The treacherous conditions of the waterways led to numerous fatal accidents among villagers and fishermen. As a result, the area became known as “Kaeng Morana.” However, over time, the name evolved to “Kaeng Tana,” eventually becoming the official name of the national park.
Within the park, there is a central island called Don Tana, which acts as a barrier in the Mun River. This island spans 450 meters in width and 700 meters in length and is connected by suspension bridges on both sides. Don Tana offers a sandy beach suitable for relaxation and is surrounded by a dry evergreen forest. The island is a popular destination for fishermen, who engage in their trade in the mornings and evenings.
Kaeng Tana is renowned for being the largest island in the Mun River. At its center, a large sandstone rock stands as a testament to the power of water erosion. This rock formation, approximately one meter high, was shaped by the constant flow of water. Additionally, there is a rectangular structure on the island, which served as a navigational marker during the French colonial era. The presence of rapid and deep rivers, as well as rock holes and caves, creates an ideal habitat for various fish species, including the Kaeng Tana Chuk Chum.
The best time to visit Kaeng Tana National Park is between November and June. During this period, the weather is pleasant, and visitors can fully enjoy the beauty of the park. The suspension bridge, linking the park office to Don Tana, offers a picturesque view of the Mun River and allows visitors to immerse themselves in the surrounding nature. Another notable attraction within the park is Tham Phra, a cliff protruding from the banks of the Mun River. Inside the cave, visitors can find inscriptions and a phallic altar dating back to the 7th – 8th centuries, providing a glimpse into the historical significance of the area. Although the original stone inscription is now housed in the Ubon Ratchathani National Museum, a replica is available for viewing.
For those seeking a short trek in nature, Rak Sai Waterfall Nature Trail is an excellent choice. This trail follows a walking path along the cliff for approximately one kilometer. Along the way, visitors can witness the beauty of a waterfall cascading down the rocky terrace, surrounded by banyan tree roots. Lichens, moss, and ferns further enhance the natural ambiance, creating a refreshing and serene atmosphere.
Lan Pha Phueng is another notable site within Kaeng Tana National Park. This steep sandstone cliff faces east and offers a stunning viewpoint to witness the sunrise. On clear days, visitors can even catch a glimpse of Laos PDR. From October to December, the cliff is adorned with a variety of wildflowers, such as dusita, soi suwanna, Blackfoot daisy, sundew, and torania, further adding to the park’s beauty.
Tat Tin Waterfall is considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the park. It is formed by the Huai Tat Ton flowing through a rocky terrace and cascading into a pool of clean, cold water. Visitors can even take a refreshing swim in the pool. The surrounding forest is teeming with diverse species of flowers, making it a perfect spot for nature enthusiasts. The best time to visit Tat Tin Waterfall is between September and December.
Sae Huai Mak, located approximately 10 kilometers from the park office, is another must-visit attraction. Situated in the area of Ban Huai Mak Tai, Khong Chiam Sub District, this natural wonder originates from the water in Huai Mak. It flows through layered rock formations, creating a stunning sight. The waterfall spans about 50 meters in width and 150 meters in length before merging with the Mekong River. The best time to visit Sae Huai Mak is also between September and December.
