“While on assignment in Lamu to document the conservation efforts of turtles in the Manda Bay area, we took a boat from Lamu Island through a thicket of bush and sand to get to the turtle hatching area, located on this stretch of beach. This beautiful landscape that you see here is where the turtle eggs call home. They hatch on land, along the coastline, where locals take care of the hatching ground and where they eventually are released into the ocean to live freely. From above, I wanted to capture the striking textures, showing a meeting place between water, vegetation, and sand. Upon releasing the newborn turtles into the ocean, I took this photo as they happily found their way into the water. There’s a lot of joy I feel when I remember the events that took place this day. This image brings back memories of a species that is under threat, and the thought of those newborn turtles wading into the ocean brings me great happiness each time I think about it. Additionally, it brings a sense of wonder and amazement, knowing how much the earth in its many different forms contributes to life for us humans and animals.” ? @petersize10?Lamu, Kenya ??
