Remember the name Bereng Monareng.
You might already be familiar with @melaninjamedia who hosted an interview here. We’re flipping the script now, though, and getting to know the visual storyteller.
1. What’s your approach to travel?
Travel is my love, my creative incubator, and even my therapist. I approach travel with open arms, embracing the foreign, stepping into the unknown, immersing myself in the experience. As long as I have my camera with me, every step I take is part of my creative journey.
2. How did you get into travel photography and videography?
I got into travel photography after a trip to Morocco in 2015. I’m currently re-editing a bunch of content from my travels in Morocco as part of my recently launched course on photo editing, and it’s giving me all the feels. The photos you see here were edited in a style I’ve been developing for a number of years, and I decided to share the knowledge, so I’m teaching others how to create their own stylized looks or presets in Adobe Lightroom. You can head to my profile for more info on the course.
Being a city boy, Morocco is basically another planet. Trips to Tunisia as a child first exposed me to the mind-blowing landscapes of Africa. So returning to North Africa with a camera and heightened senses was a recipe for creative expression and self-discovery. I discovered that I love creating. Videography followed because, eventually, the single frames didn’t paint the full picture. Now I travel the world with my camera, creating marketing material, filming aftermovies, capturing branded content, making travel films and documenting experiences.
3. Where are you daydreaming about going next?
I’m daydreaming about returning to South Africa. My business partner @redefinetravel and I are launching a travel show to promote racial solidarity while achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We’ll be traveling 21 Asian countries in 2021 and 22 African countries in 2022. With Maddie being Filipina American and myself being British South African, this project is close to our hearts and a part of our life’s work. In November we head to South Africa to kick off the project.
