OK, D.C. – we see you!
@nadiabelle shared this beautiful tribute to #BlackLivesMatter by artist @simoneyvetteleigh, that is now painted on the street leading to the White House.
Mayor @murielbowser comissioned the piece. “There are people who are craving to be heard and to be seen, and to have their humanity recognized, and we had the opportunity to send that message loud and clear on a very important street in our city,” Bowser said. “And it is that message, and that message is to the American people, that Black Lives Matter black humanity matters, and we as a city raise that up as part of our values as a city.”
A message that demands your attention. ✊? And a message that activists are pushing to be followed through with real change and action.
Many have called to defund the D.C. police department, one of the 10 largest police departments in the nation, and one that has a proposed budget that would increase police funding by over $500 million — with an 11 percent cut to violence prevention programs.
