“For me, this place is special for so many reasons. It’s a place where I’ve met so many new and inspiring people, who have shown me what it means to be deeply passionate about something. It’s impressive to witness their ability to scale a slippery frozen-over waterfall in the dark—some of them even live to climb every day, over and over again, and make it look easy.
I remember the first time I heard about this place. I was on a road trip through Austria in 2018, when I met a group of people who mentioned that during the winter months, ice climbing was what they love to do. After hearing all about it, I knew I had to experience it for myself. After some planning, one evening, we picked a time and arrived at nightfall to scale this incredible ice formation. What I loved about this experience was how it challenged me creatively. Technically speaking, it wasn’t easy. To bring this moment to life in the dark, I had to set up multiple lights and then merge a variety of exposures into one, creating this scene that you see today. However, when I look back at this image, what’s most meaningful to me was being able to capture the connection between climber and ice—honored to have been the one to capture this moment for them.” ? @rubenvanvreckem ?
