The Aceh Tsunami Museum was built as a monument to commemorate the tsunami disaster which in 2004 destroyed most of Aceh.
In addition, the museum also has various important functions, one of which is as a rescue location when a tsunami disaster strikes again in the future.
Of course you still remember and still feel the horror of the 2004 tsunami that hit Aceh and several other regions in the world. That year was really the darkest for the Acehnese people.
Just imagine, the death toll from the tsunami disaster was recorded at 240,000. The bodies were lying on top of the rubble of the buildings that were destroyed by the tsunami waves.
This work certainly leaves a bitterness that cannot be lost in the memories and hearts of Acehnese people. But time is ticking and they can’t keep wailing about it.
To restore the spirit of the Acehnese and as a symbol of memories. So a historical monument was built called the Aceh tsunami museum. the location is right in the heart of Banda Aceh
Over time, because of the unique shape and historical value it has. This museum eventually turned into a historical tourist destination. There are very many enthusiasts, namely from local tourists and foreign tourists.
The uniqueness of the Aceh tsunami museum
The Aceh Tsunami Museum was inaugurated in February 2009 with a unique building concept and architecture.
The 4th floor building which was designed by Ridwan Kamil, who now serves as the governor of Bandung, combines classic and modern design concepts.
We can feel the classic impression and see it directly from the ground floor design, somewhat similar to a stilt building. Meanwhile, the modern design, radiates from the arch of the building.
Ridwan Kamil apparently chose an arch-shaped building design because it was inspired by the typical tsunami waves whose waves were tall, curved and swirling. Overall. The design of the museum building is very unique and second to none.
Apart from the unique and distinctive building design. The room in the tsunami museum also has its own uniqueness. There are four important rooms here. the four rooms are.
- Devotional room
The first time you enter it, visitors will pass through a small hallway with very minimal lighting. This hallway is very narrow and flanked by black walls that are sprinkled with water.
The roar of water splashes accompanied by the sound of the call to prayer, as if to remind you of the seconds of the tsunami disaster. So it is fitting that this hallway be called a devotional room. Your emotions will really spill over when you pass it.
- Room the light of god
After passing the devotional room. Visitors will then enter an even darker room. This room is called “the light of god”. It contains the names of all the victims of the Aceh tsunami disaster.
In addition to the walls filled with the names of the victims, the top of the room, which is in the shape of a conical well, is also decorated with Allah’s lafadz.
The dim light emanating from the lafadz of Allah which is highlighted by the light, seems to make us realize that we can never escape from Allah’s will and destiny.
- Hope Bridge Room
After contemplating in the room “the light of god”. The visitors will then exit the room by passing a circuitous path.
It aims to remember the struggles of the victims when trying to save themselves from the tsunami waves.
At the end of this road, visitors will find a bridge called the hope bridge. This bridge is decorated with 25 state flags that used to help Indonesia when the tsunami disaster occurred.
- Evacuation room
The evacuation room is located at the top level of the building. As the name suggests, this room was originally created for the purpose of being used as a rescue room when a tsunami disaster occurs in the future.
However, because the designation is only used in case of an emergency, this evacuation room is not open to the public.
