The Jami ‘Pontianak mosque has a name, namely the Sultan Abdurrrohman Mosque and is a silent witness to the development of the city of Pontianak.

Located in the Khadriyah palace area. This mosque is the oldest mosque building in the capital city of West Kalimantan

According to history, on 23 October 1771 AD or 24 Rajab 1181 Hijriah, there was a group led by Syarif Abdurrahman Alkadrie.

Opening a forest at the junction of three Landak Rivers with the aim of building a village to live in and a mosque.

The village was then given the name Pontianak which when interpreted in Malay means the Kuntilanak Ghost.

It is said that the origin of the name of the city was because the residents of the newly built settlement were often disturbed by kuntilanak.

On Monday, to be precise, the 8th of Sha’ban 1192 Hijriyah, Syarif Abdurrahman Alkadrie was trusted by the people to be crowned the First Pontianak sultan who was later known as the Sultanate of Alkadriyah.

Sultan Syarif Abdurrahman Alkadrie ruled the Sultanate of Alkadriyah from 1771 to 1808 AD.

The existence of the government under the leadership of Syarif Abdurrahman Alkadrie developed very rapidly and became a city of commerce and port.

The simple sound, which was built since the residents inhabited the place, became a mosque and became the center of religious activities at that time, as well as a sign of the establishment of the Alkhadriyah sultanate government.

This surau was started to be built by sultn Syarif Abdurrohman which was then followed by his younger brother named Sultan Kasim.

The construction of the surau which was continued by Sultan Kasim was because Sultan Syarif Abdurrahman had met his end when the construction of the surau had not been completed.

But then continued again by Syarif Usman who was the son of Sultan Syarif Abdurrahman when he entered adulthood.

As a form of respect for the services of his father, namely Sultan Syarif Abdurrahman, Sultan Syarif Usman gave the name of the mosque according to his father’s name.

Since its construction, the mosque has become the center of religious activities and worship and has become the spread of Islamic teachings in the area.

Before becoming Sultan Alkadrie, Sarif Abdurrahman Alkadri was a child of Arab descent, namely the son of Habib Husein who was a propagator of Islam from Semarang.

Then in 1733 AD Habib Husein came to the Matan Kingdom and occupied a position in the kingdom.

Being in the Kingdom of Matan Habib Husein then married the daughter of King Matan Sultan Kamaludin named Nyai Tua. After that Habib was appointed as the Mufti of the Kingdom and from this marriage was born Sarief Abdurrahman Alkadrie.

As time passed, Al Habib left the Matan Kingdom because he faced a dispute with King Matan and moved to the Mempawah Kingdom until he died.

After the news that Al Habib died, his position in the Mempawah Kingdom was replaced by his son, Sarif Abdurrahman Alkadrie.

However, it did not last long, Sarif Abdurrahman Alkadrie decided to leave Mempawah to spread the teachings of Islam.

Sarief Abdurrahman Alkadrie traveled from Mempawah along the Kapuas river.

Accompanied by his group which boarded 14 boats which then stopped at the Kapuas River junction and settled there.

The Jami ‘Pontianak mosque was originally built with thatched roofs with the construction made of wood.

It has a rectangular shape with a size of 33.27 x 27.74 meters and a circular hallway is built around it which is bordered by a fence.

The building was originally shaped like a local people’s house at that time, which was in the form of a house on stilts, the mosque poles were also made of wood but to avoid weathering, they are now cast.

The colors that dominate the mosque building are yellow and green, yellow for the walls and green for the ceiling.

Philosophy, yellow symbolizes majesty, while green represents a prophetic color.

The shape of the roof of the mosque is made in 4 piles, bordered by sheets of bullian wood, the roof at the first and second place is given ventilation holes for the entry of light and air.

There is a terrace in the shape of a substation at each corner of the second roof. According to local residents, this forging was used as a place to say the call to prayer.

However, another perception holds that it symbolizes the number of the Prophet’s companions, which amounted to 4.

The mosque building is equipped with 3 main doors with a height of almost 3 meters.

Inside the mosque there are 6 sokoguru (pillars or pillars) in the form of a circle with a very large size.

The point is to support the entire roof of the mosque. The philosophy why there are 6, which symbolizes the pillars of Islam, which amount to 6.

In addition, there are also very large rectangular poles.

The mosque’s mihrab is shaped like the mihrab of the Grogot ground mosque, and there is a shiny yellow pulpit with beautiful gold carvings.
