A brief History
At first the Gembira Loka Botanical Garden and Zoo were built on the idea and also the initiative of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono VIII in 1933.
At that time the Sultan wanted an entertainment place in Jogjakarta that was able to provide entertainment to the people of Jogja in general.
The zoo and botanical garden were originally named Rojo Gardens. The idea of the VIII Sultan was finally continued during the reign of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX who was assisted by Ir. Karsten, a well-known architect from the Netherlands.
Ir. Karsten finally chose the area west of the Winongo river because this area was ideal and suitable for the development of the Rojo Garden.
Unfortunately, the development process had to be delayed due to World War II which caused Jogjakarta to have a new invader, namely Japan.
After the independence process and the selection of Yogyakarta as the capital of Indonesia, the intention to continue development was sparked.
Finally, it was only realized again in 1949 after World War II was over and the capital returned to Jakarta.
The Indonesian government took part in providing mementos to the people of Yogyakarta by presenting people’s entertainment venues that could give satisfaction and this idea was pioneered by Januismadi and his colleague Hadi, SH.
Unfortunately, this idea cannot be realized immediately to spoil the people of Yogyakarta.
In accordance with the notary deed of RM. Wiranto No. 11 dated September 10, 1953, which was then led by Sri Paduka KGPAA Paku Alam VIII in 1953, finally became the starting point for the establishment of the Gembira Loka Yogyakarta Foundation.
And in 1959 KGPAA Paku Alam VIII finally decided to step down and appointed Tirtowinoto to continue the process of building the Gembira Loka Zoo.
And in 1978 under the leadership of Tirtowinoto, finally Gembira Loka has a complete collection of animals and is now one of the entertainment venues for the people of Jogja.
Existing Facilities
The Gembira Loka tourist area has provided a variety of complete facilities. Apart from toilets, parking areas, prayer rooms, tourists can also try some recreational rides that are no less interesting.
One of them that can be tried is the Catamaran Boat. This vehicle will invite tourists around a large artificial lake.
Apart from exploring the lake, tourists are also invited to tour the Mayang Tirta area which has the shape of a large ship.
Mayang Tirta is one of the entertainment and performance stage facilities used to entertain visitors at Gembira Loka.

Route to Location
The address of Gembira Loka Zoo is in the Rejowinangun area. The access is quite easy from downtown Jogja.
To visit it, tourists can use private vehicles or public transportation.
For public transportation, you can use Trans Jogja which departs from Giwangan Terminal directly to the bus stop in front of Gembira Loka. It only takes about 20 minutes.
