Not many people know it as a tourist location, especially for people outside East Java. Because indeed, the city government of Gresik hasn’t named Bawean as a tourist location for too long.
Promotion is not yet intense. It is fortunate that many online media have started writing about this island so that they are indirectly participating in the process of promoting it.
Finally, although it did not have an immediate impact, the increase in the number of visitors showed an increase. Gradually, it will definitely become a famous tourist destination like other tourist locations in Indonesia.
Get closer
Before further discussing tourist objects on this island. I want to invite you first to get to know him more deeply. Where is the exact location, what is the state of the area and what is the population like.
Let’s get started.
This island is a land in the middle of the Java sea. This land area is approximately 196.3 square kilometers with a slightly hilly contour.
If you look for the exact location of the city of Gresik, then it is located to the north of Gresik. And if measured, the distance from Gresik Port is about 120 kilometers.
Administratively, the island, which has two sub-districts, namely the Sangkapura district and the Tambak sub-district, is included in the Gresik Regency area. On it, live about 107,000 people with the Bawen tribe as the original tribe.

Apart from the Bawean tribe, there are also residents who are a mixture of other tribes such as the Javanese, Sumatran, Kalimantan, Madurese and Sulawesi tribes who complement the indigenous tribes.
In terms of belief, the majority of the population is Muslim. To make a living, native men usually work as farmers and fishermen.
In addition, in order to seek better welfare. Many indigenous people also choose to migrate to other countries as workers. The countries they currently subscribe to are Malaysia and Singapore.
Due to the large number of native men who chose to migrate, finally now the inhabitants of Bawean Island are mostly women.
A brief History

Some of you certainly have a great curiosity about the origin of the word Bawean. Naturally, I used to feel the same way when I first read about him.
Here’s the story. Bawean word is taken from Sanskrit. If interpreted, it means “the emergence of sunlight”.
That said, around the year 1350 ago. A group of sailors from Majapahit caught in a big storm in the middle of the Java Sea. The incident that took place that night became a tense moment for the sailors.
But thanks to Allah’s help, they were being beaten by a storm towards a land. And just as the sun rose, the sailors managed to set their feet on the edge of the island which is now named Bawean.
Besides the story of the Majapahit sailors above. There is also another story that is believed to have happened and accompanied its existence.
This story is also what makes him not only known as Bawean. If you have read reviews from other media, you may find information that it is also known as the island princess.
How is the story

The story begins with the voyage of a family from the kingdom of Campa. At that time they sailed from the kingdom with the aim of Java. But on the way, the king’s daughter suddenly became ill. The king finally chose to stop for a moment at Bawean Island.
Long story short, the king’s daughter finally died there. Even the tomb of the princess can still be found in Kumalasa village until now. The tomb is currently known as the jujuk Campa tomb.
In honor of the king’s daughter who died. So finally this island was also named the island of a princess.
So, if you hear people mentioning Putri Island, then they must be referring to Bawean Island.
