Talking about Central Java, certainly cannot be separated from the rich history, culture, customs, enchanting nature and abundance of tourist attractions. Borobudur Temple is one proof of this.

Although it is not one of the seven wonders of the world anymore, the splendor of this vacation spot located in Magelang is still recognized. In the complex there are around 1,460 reliefs and 504 stupas that are still preserved today.

Another proof is the existence of Umbul Sidomukti, a place to relax while enjoying the beauty of nature. The area is a swimming pool located at an altitude of 1,200 meters above sea level.

The appearance is very beautiful, especially divided into three tiered formations with the shallowest pool sequence for children and the deepest for adults.

Because it is in the middle of lush trees, of course visitors will be satisfied with the beautiful green panorama as far as the eye can see. Apart from swimming, other activities that can be done here are horse riding, camping, outbound, hanging out in cafes and many more.

However, if you are bored with the same vacation spots, you can try combining the two concepts above, namely temples and bathing pools. Located in Magelang Regency, Umbul Temple is an ancient site that was built since the time of the Syailendra Dynasty.

Until now, his remains are still protected. In fact, Umbul Temple is used as one of the mainstay tourist destinations in the district.

A brief History

Based on the story of local residents, the Umbul Telomoyo Temple is a legacy of the Ancient Mataram Kingdom which was built around the 9th century AD. According to legend, this place was used as a bath for the king’s daughter after performing rituals at Borobudur Temple.

The hot springs were discovered in the 8th or 9th century. It is thought that it was surrounded by a guard temple, because there are several pieces of stone with reliefs around it.

The origin of the name itself comes from the air bubbles rising from the bottom of the pool. Then the word “Umbul” in Javanese language, which means to appear.

The site was buried when Islam entered Indonesia and was excavated during the colonial era. In the 1870s, the pool was discovered and excavated by the Dutch government. Initially, the pond was located behind the bathing complex, right in the Elo River Basin.

The eruption of Mount Merapi in 1906 caused the Umbul Temple to be damaged and buried by the volcanic material flowing in the river. Finally, a reconstruction process was carried out by moving the pond some distance from the Elo River.

The temple foundation, which is quite close to the pond, is still submerged in the ground.

Hot water bath

When they arrive at the location, visitors will see a concrete fence enclosing the place. Maybe if you only look at it at a glance and have never looked for a reference photo or image related to the Umbul Temple, you will not know that there are historical relics in it.

Once you buy a ticket and enter the area, the view of the pool surrounded by rocks will be welcoming. The pool is divided into two, namely hot water baths and fresh (cold) water.

They are side by side, but one is higher. The pool wall itself is made of layers of andesite stone. Some of the rocks lining the edges depict various reliefs of animals, plants and stupas at the top of the temple.

If you look carefully, the building still displays a thick historical nuance. There is a foundation or umpak at each corner of the bottom of the pool which has a function as a roof support post.

Meanwhile, other rocks that resemble a flat phallus, apart from being a patirtan (bath), were probably used as a seat for the knights when meditating or meditating in meditation.

From the reliefs and relics in the shape of the phallus and yoni at several points, we can conclude that the Umbul Temple is a Hindu-style building. And if you look at the history of the Ancient Mataram Kingdom, it is possible that the temple was built by the Hindu Sanjaya Dynasty.

Despite the name hot spring, the water in this pool is actually quite warm. Uniquely, the smell of sulfur and smoke is not very pronounced. In contrast to hot springs in other places which have a strong aroma.

The color is clearer and slightly greenish due to the growth of moss at the bottom of the pool. Not cloudy due to sulfur and other mineral compounds like most. So, visitors can soak as much as they want without worrying about any risks.

Because of this content, for a long time the Umbul Temple bathing pool has been believed to be able to cure itching and skin diseases. Moreover, the temperature of the warm water is useful for bone therapy and blood flow.

Until now, the bath is still used for rituals of purifying oneself, such as Padusan before the fasting month, Melasti ceremony before Nyepi Day and others.

In fact, the pool is to be made to resemble the Taman Sari Baths in the Yogyakarta Palace. However, due to a dispute, the settlement was not complete until now.

The tourist spot, which is open from 06.00 am, is equipped with a large grassy garden or yard. It is right beside the hot pool. So, visitors can use it for a picnic with the family after finishing soaking.

Umbul Temple is a tourist attraction that is empty of visitors. Even on holidays the pool is not full. But, it benefits tourists as they can relax more solemnly.
