The monument is called the Suryo Monument. The name of the monument is taken from the governor named Raden Mas Tumenggung Ario Soerjo or commonly referred to as Governor Suryo and RM Suryo.
This monument was made to honor his services and to commemorate Governor Suryo who died as a result of the PKI at that time.
But you should not think that this monument is just a monument that is very boring. This monument is very beautiful and also interesting which is very worthy for you to visit.
This is because the Suryo Monument is decorated with 23 types of rare plants and also rare animals such as deer. In addition, the Suryo Monument has its own characteristic, namely the existence of a bird market.
Description of Uniqueness
The address of the Governor Suryo Monument is located in the Apsari Park Complex, Jalan Governor Suryo, Ngawi, Central Java Province.
This monument depicts the mystery of a governor who was known to be very brave and then he died as a result of a rebellion from the PKI.
Therefore, to commemorate the governor, the Governor Suryo Monument was made. Besides the statue of Governor Suryo, there are also two statues of police officers who were killed by the PKI at the same time and place.
In addition, around the monument there are various types of rare plants that are very beautiful. Among them are sandalwood, citradora, sapodilla, sonokeling and many other types of plants found at the Suryo Monument to 23 types of trees.
There is also a collection of various kinds of birds that are bred and bred. Examples are turtledoves, kepodang, bekisar and others.
Besides that, there is also a bird market which is located west of the Suryo Monument. Lots of traders come from outside Ngawi City to the market to buy birds and sell them outside Ngawi City.
There are also those who buy just to add to the collection of birds at home. This is because the price of birds in this market is very cheap compared to the price of birds in the market.
Usually, to commemorate the heritage day, the location of the Suryo Monument is used for walking. Hikes are held to remember and feel the struggles of the heroes.
The walk usually starts from Wana Wisata Monumen Suryo and ends at Ngawi square with a distance of 30 km.
A brief History
The Suryo Monument has a history that local residents will never easily forget. Because this history is the core of the origin of the Governor Suryo Monument.
Where it is told that the statue of a person in this monument or rather a governor who is often known as RM Suryo, died because of the PKI.
RM Suryo was the first governor of Ngawi Regency to be brutally murdered by a PKI group.
The incident began when Governor Suryo was on his way home on the afternoon of November 9, 1948, to be precise.
While on the way, his car was stopped by a group of PKI people. At the same time, it happened that two police officers were passing the road, so the PKI stopped the two officers.
Some of the PKI also forced Governor Suryo and two police officers to get out of the car and dragged them into the forest. Then the governor and the two police officers were stripped naked and killed in the middle of the forest.
After the governor and two police officers were dead, the PKI left their bodies in the forest. Meanwhile, the car driven by Governor Suryo and two police officers was burned by the PKI.
Then after four days, the bodies of the three of them were only found by someone who was looking for wood in the morning.
After that, the body of Governor Suryo was taken by residents to Madiun and buried in Sawahan, Kepalrejo Village, Magetan Regency to be precise at the Sasono Mulyo cemetery.
After that, the Suryo Monument was built to commemorate his services to the Indonesian people.
History of Speech
RM Suryo is a hero who is the core of monuments in East Java. He is a very brave and wise person.
This can be seen from the stories about his struggle against British and allied soldiers who wanted to destroy Surabaya. Then there was a clash between the People of Surabaya and the British Army which took place on 28-30 October.
The clash resulted in General Mallaby (Commander of British Forces) being killed, and the British issued an ultimatum stating that the people of Surabaya must surrender all available weapons by 10 November 1945 at 06.00 WIB.
And if you don’t heed the ultimatum, the city of Surabaya will be destroyed by land, sea and air.
Then because the person responsible for the decision was RM Suryo as the Governor of East Java who was given by the central government of Jakarta.
So Governor Suryo held a meeting with several hero figures. After that RM Suryo through the radio mouthpiece delivered a speech rejecting the British ultimatum.
He gave a firm and loud speech at RRI, and said that Arek-Arek Suroboyo will fight against the British ultimatum to the death.
After RM Suryo delivered his speech via radio funnels, then on November 10, 1945 a battle broke out against British troops which lasted for 3 weeks.
After the fighting, the city of Surabaya became a city of death. In that incident, the last one to leave Surabaya was Governor Suryo. He then established an emergency government in Mojokerto.
