Overview of the Textile Museum

It is common knowledge that Jakarta is indeed a storehouse of historical places, including museums. Of the many museums in Jakarta, it seems that the Textile Museum currently still exists as a place and means of educating people to learn batik.

The presence of this Textile Museum in the middle of the capital city will certainly make it easier for people to learn Indonesian batik motifs. The Textile Museum is one of the cultural heritages whose function is to collect, preserve and exhibit Indonesian textile art works.

This magnificent building with ancient style stands on a land of 16,410 m². Before being used as the Textile Museum, this building was once the private home of a French descent.

After the owner of the house died, the building was sold to a Turkish consultate named Abdul Aziz Al Musawi Al Katiri. Then in 1942, this building again changed hands to Karel Cristian Cruq.

After some time, this building was made into the Headquarters of the People’s Security Front (BKR). After Indonesia’s independence, to be precise in 1947, this building again changed ownership to Lie Sion Phin.

Until finally in 1975, this ancient building was handed over to the DKI Jakarta Government and functioned as a Textile Museum. The inauguration of the Textile Museum itself was carried out by Mrs. Tien Soeharto on June 28, 1976.

Textile Museum specialty

The Textile Museum is one of the largest museums in Indonesia. There are at least about 1,000 pieces of Indonesian textile collections, most of which come from traditional collections. For tourists who come to the Textile Museum can see various types of batik cloth with simple geometric patterns to complex motifs.

Some of the motifs on display here include Batik Solo, Yogyakarta, Pekalongan, Madura, Cirebon, Palembang to Riau. Not only that, tourists can also see the Keraton Cirebon flag which is one of the selected collections in this museum.

The flag of the Cirebon Palace consists of cotton in the form of written batik decorated with Arabic calligraphy. It is said that the flag is a historical relic that was passed on since 1776 AD. The flag was very sacred at the Cirebon Palace which at that time was often used as a symbol of the syiar of Islam.

Another feature that is offered by the Textile Museum is not only the large collection of textiles but there are others. Here you can also find special spots that are suitable for relaxing and taking selfies, namely Taman Pewarna Alam.

Taman Pewarna Alam has an area of ​​about 2,000 m² which is planted around it with green trees. Not carelessly, these trees are said to be used as natural coloring agents, you know, that’s why this location is named Taman Pewarna Alam.

The existence of Taman Pewarna Alam can also be an educational tool for visitors in getting to know the kinds of trees that can be used as raw material for natural dyes. Besides that, here you also take a batik course where you can take home the results.
