This interesting sightseeing object is located in Sragen Regency, Kalijambe region, to be precise in the Solo Depression, at the foot of Mount Lawu (approximately 17 km from Solo City).

Research on ancient humans and animals was started by GHRVon Koenigswald, a paleoanthropologist from Germany who worked for the Dutch government in Bandung in the 1930s.

He is a person who has contributed to training people to recognize fossils. The results of the research were then collected at the house of the Head of Krikilan Village, Mr. Totomarsono, until 1975.

At that time, many tourists came to visit this area, so a new perspective emerged to build a museum.

At first this museum was built on a land area of 1,000 m² which is next to the Krikilan Village Hall.

This representative museum was only built in 1980 as a repository for discovered fossils and serves the purposes of the traveler. The building area is about 16,675 m² with a space of about 750 m².

The ancient human site here is a world heritage that has been established by UNESCO on December 6, 1996.

The site, which includes 2 districts, namely Sragen and Karanganyar, has an area of 56 km and is recognized as a nature reserve.

In 1977, a museum was established under the name Sangiran Prehistoric Museum. Before standing, all the fossils were placed in the house of the Krikilan Village Chief named Toto Marsono.

With a number of discoveries, Toto Marsono’s house became increasingly unfit, therefore a Sangiran Museum of Prehistory was founded with the theme “Appreciation of the History of Human Civilization”.

Sangiran is increasingly known by the world because of the arrival of foreign researchers who at that time Indonesia was still colonized by the Dutch.

A researcher named Eugene Dubois had come to research at this location but in the end it was not suitable and then moved his research site.

In 1891, Dubois found a fossil Pithecanthropus erectus at Trinil Ngawi. The researcher who came to research at that location was von Koenigswald, the discoverer Homo erectus and various animal fossils.

From various studies, it was concluded that the distribution Homo erectus in Java, they are located in the area of Kontakmacan, Trinil, Mojokerto and Ngandong.

Early humans are thought to have become extinct because of meteorite showers, volcanic eruptions and quite drastic environmental changes.
