However, the majority of the existing pine forests are located in mountainous areas with access roads that are difficult to pass, so to be able to enjoy its beauty, you have to spend a lot of energy and money, as well as a big risk because of its location far from residential areas.
Unlike the case with Punti Kayu. The Pine Forest in Palembang City is located close to the city center, easily accessible by various types of transportation and is equipped with a number of recreational rides.
With that potential, it is not difficult for Punti Kayu to become a magnet for tourists, even though this tourist attraction which is decades old has sunk due to the emergence of a number of new tourist attractions.
Punti Kayu is a tourist park located in the heart of Palembang, about 7 km from the city center. Since 1937 or during the Dutch colonial administration, this forest has been preserved before finally, through the Decree of the Minister of Forestry, it was designated as Forest Tourism.
Furthermore, on 7 October 2002 its function was expanded to become a Conservation Forest without leaving its function as a Tourism Forest. Therefore, based on area mapping, this area is divided into 4 areas, namely: Recreation Park Area, Conservation Forest, Camping and Outbound Area and Lake and Swamp.
Because of its function as a Conservation Forest which is a vehicle for education and research as well as supporting cultural activities, making this place during the holiday season is visited by many students and students who intend to study and conduct research as well as various other activities related to flora and fauna.
According to data from the manager, the Punti Kayu Forest is overgrown with various types of plants and inhabited by several types of animals. The types of flora here include pine, acacia, mahogany, talog, pulai and several other types of plants.
While the types of fauna that occupy the forest area consist of monkeys, herds of long-tailed macaques, civets, lizards, several species of birds and rare insects that do not yet have scientific names.
The forest, which has an area of 39.9 hectares, was once called Taman Sari and Taman Syailendra, and was popular in the 90s to early 2000, before finally sinking due to the emergence of a number of new tourist attractions.
Considering that Punti Kayu’s potential is large enough to bring in tourists, a number of efforts have been made to restore the glory of this tourist attraction, one of which is by adding more rides and facilities for visitors.
As a tourism object, Punti Kayu is open every day from 08.00 – 16.00. Because the location is not far from the city center, making it easily accessible either by private vehicle or public transportation.
