When talking about hilly areas with stunning natural scenery in West Java, so far the only ones that have been the center of attention are Majalengka with its Panyaweuyan Terraces and Bandung with Bintang Puncak in Cimeyan and Keraton Cliff in Dago.
However, since 2016, Purwakarta also has similar tourist attractions with natural charms that are not inferior to Panyaweuyan Terrace, Puncak Bintang or Keraton Cliffs. The tourist spot is called Panenjoan.
Taking advantage of the area above which grows tea plantations and various types of green trees, the local village community takes advantage of the existing natural potential and processes it into a tourist attraction.
Because it has a beautiful natural panorama plus a unique bamboo bridge as well as interesting photo spots and properties, it didn’t take long for this newly established tourist attraction to be widely recognized and become a tourist destination.
Panenjoan Hill is not part of the Ciletuh Sukabumi Geopark which has been confirmed as a National Geopark. Ciletuh Geopark is a natural park formed by ancient rocks that are millions of years old.
Several other tourist objects that are part of the Ciletuh Geopark include Curug Awang, Curug Sodong, Curug Cikanteh, Curug Cimarinjung, Puncak Darma, Palangpang Beach, and several other tourist objects in the Ciletuh Sukabumi area.
The name Panenjoan comes from the word “Nenjo” which in Sundanese means “to see”. The people of Kampung Cinangka named it Panenjoan Hill, because on top of the hill the surrounding area can be seen including Lake Jatiluhur and Mount Sangga Buana which is in the distance.
Initially this hill was just an ordinary hilly area which was only visited by local residents. However, after the surrounding area had been greened with various trees, especially a tea garden managed by PT Kartini Wana Raya, the number of visitors who came from time to time increased.
Moreover, not far from the hill area, there is the Tomb of Shaykh Daka which is also known as Shaykh Serepong, the younger brother of Shaykh Dako Rancadarah Purwakarta.
This sacred tomb is always crowded with pilgrims every Friday night, so that Panenjoan is increasingly known because many pilgrims have taken the time to head to the hill area.
This potential is kissed by the residents of Sindang Panon Village, so they collaborate with PT Kartini Wana Raya to manage this area to become a tourist spot.
By building a bridge of bamboo that reaches hundreds of meters in height, about 5 – 7 meters above the ground and complete it with a number of photo spots, in 2016 Bukit Panenjoan was inaugurated as a new tourist attraction.
The name of this new tourist spot is almost the same as the name of other tourist objects, the name of the mountains and several places in West Java and Banten Provinces.
Such as Panenjoan Rancakalong and Jatigede in Sumedang, Cimanggeng Panenjoan in Cilacap, Panenjoan Kuningan, Cicalengka Panenjoan in Bandung, Panenjoan Hill in Ciemas and Cibadak Sukabumi, Ciwaru Harvest Tour in Ciamis, Panenjoan Carenang, Gunungsari and Mancak Tourism in Banten, Mount Panenjoan. Cilacap and Mount Panenjoan in Tasikmalaya.
As well as a number of charming photo spots in Brebes Regency, Central Java. However, there is an additional word “Salem” behind the name of a tourist attraction in Brebes, so it has the name Panenjoan Salem Hill, because the hill’s location is in Salem District.
Once opened to the public, visitors who want to go to the tourist location are charged an entrance fee and also a vehicle parking fee. Visiting hours are limited from 08.00 – 17.00, because after sunset, the road leading up the hill is not possible to explore because it is not equipped with lighting facilities.
Route to Location
With an address in Kampung Cinangka, Sindang Panon Village, Bojong District, Purwakarta Regency, West Java Province, the distance between Panenjoan and the center of Purwakarta is only about 17 km, so it is relatively close and easily accessible.
The road leading to the location is also in pretty good condition, it’s just not that wide, making it a bit difficult for vehicles such as buses and trucks to pass.
The journey that starts from the city of Purwakarta can take the route that leads to Wanayasa, then continues to Pondok Salam. After that, pass the Indung Rahayu Gate which is the entrance to Salem Village by turning the vehicle to the right.
Continue to follow the straight road for 10 km and there you will find a road sign leading to Cinangka Village, where Bukit Panenjoan is located.
After traveling for approximately 30 minutes from Purwakarta City, you will arrive at the parking area of the tourist spot. Arriving here, you can already feel the fresh mountain air and can start taking pictures, because the surrounding scenery is indeed instagramable.
But that doesn’t mean the trip is over, because after buying a ticket and entering the tourist gate, you are still required to walk 1 – 1.5 km.
About 300 meters from the counter there is a complex of stalls and kiosks. If you don’t bring supplies, take the time to buy food and drinks first, because at tourist sites there are no food vendors.
Continue tracking again until you find a prayer room and a toilet which is a sign that the place you are going to is near. After that you can find a stretch of tea plantations decorated with a bridge made of bamboo with a very exotic view.
Hunt for Beauty
At tourist sites, visitors can start activities by climbing onto a bamboo bridge which has a height of 5 – 7 meters above ground level.
The bridge that stretches over the tea plantation is hundreds of meters long with a circular shape. Even though it is made of bamboo, visitors do not have to worry about the bridge falling down, because it is designed very sturdy.
Some parts of the bridge are decorated with viewing posts in the form of huts with thatched roofs as well as interesting spots and photo properties.
On this bridge, you can see the beautiful scenery ranging from the green of the tea plantation area, the rice fields and residential areas, the hills to the Jatiluhur Reservoir and Mount Sangga Buana.
This is where you can use up your camera or cellphone memory to paint the beauty of nature through the language of pictures, and take advantage of existing spots and properties to take pictures. There is no limit to how long you are at the location, how many photo spots are used and how many photos are taken.
It’s just that during the holiday season, visitors also have to be tolerant of other visitors who also want to take advantage of the same property to take pictures, so try not to stay in one photo spot too long.
The activities and creativity of the residents of Sindang Panon Village in utilizing the Geopark location deserve to be appreciated, because the Geopark area is indeed an integrated area that can be used to prosper the community’s economy while still providing protection and preserving the geological heritage in a sustainable manner.
Price of admission
To enter the tourist area, the entrance fee charged for each visitor is only Rp. 5,000 plus a parking fee of Rp. 3,000 for motorbikes and Rp. 5,000 for cars. With this HTM, visitors can be at the location as much as they like and take as many photos as possible without any additional costs.
That’s why ticket prices are fairly cheap, because in other tourist spots that also sell current photo spots, there are those who charge an additional fee for each photo spot that visitors want to use.
It’s just that for public facilities for tourists, Panenjoan Hill is still fairly minimal. This is not only because this tourist spot is still newly established, but also because the management system is purely held by the local village community.
However, if it is only to fulfill basic needs such as bathrooms, toilets and prayer rooms, visitors do not need to be confused. Likewise, to buy food and drinks, because not far from the entrance there is a complex of stalls that sell various kinds of simple food at very affordable prices.
Another limitation is the accommodation facilities where there is no single inn around the location, so visitors who come from outside the city must head to the city of Purwakarta to find hotels and other lodging places.
